“Summer Sixteen” vs. “War Pain”

“Talking bout these other rappers getting old is even getting old
Worrying about your followers, you need to get your dollars up
Me and Meek, young niggas poppin’ like our collars up” – Drake from Meek Mill’s “Amen

I feel like I might have spoken on this before but remember when “Amen” dropped in 2012? Seems like a lifetime ago when it comes to the life expectancy of a rap single. It made it to number 57 on the Billboard Top 100 and also fared well on the R&B/Hip-Hop and Rap charts as well. Fast forward to present time and you would have thought that these two were enemies the way that they are going at each other on records. But the latest in their on going soap opera, has both rappers taking shots at each other on their latest released music.

Summer Sixteen

First up, we have Drake who dropped “Summer Sixteen” where he’s ‘looking for revenge’. On this track, he takes weak aim at President Obama (“Tell Obama that my verses are just like the whips that he in
/They bulletproof
“). Now what’s funny is that Norm Kelly, who is a Councillor for Toronto and instigator in this “beef”, sent a tweet to the President’s Obama twitter repeating the line. And when that heat flamed up in his mentions, he since deleted the tweet. He then takes the shot at Meek by saying “You don’t have to try to say it louder nigga/Trust, we heard you the first time“. Then he goes on and has words for Tory Lanez (“All you boys in the new Toronto want to be me a little“), Jay Z (“I used to wanna be on Roc-A-Fella then I turned into Jay“) and Kanye (“Now I got a house in LA, Now I got a bigger pool than Ye/And look man, Ye’s pool is nice, mine’s just big is what I’m saying“). Now while the latter two shouldn’t be considered diss lines but I know certain ones may perceive as such. “Summer Sixteen” was cool for what it was worth but with all the music that Drake’s releasing, will it be a memorable song?

Not less than fifteen minutes later, I’m seeing my Twitter timeline buzz about Meek Mill dropping Part 2 of his 4/4 series. And in this series, he has a diss track aimed at Drake called “War Pain”. And begins referencing Drake being at the Four Seasons at the same time as him when “Back To Back” dropped. (“Location, Toronto, status – five star hotel, Four Seasons./Them chumps right upstairs, they know not to come down here playin’ no real niggas./Mood, I’m still up countin’ five hundred thousand cash./Nicki in the bedroom sleep, life is good“) Then he goes into a bunch of trap/drug talk and swings it back around to Drake. (“You ain’t write it’ nigga, we caught ya, can’t erase that shit/And you claimin’ you HOV now? Why you state that shit?/Man I hate that shit, niggas be talkin’ out they face“) There are things said on “Sixteen Summer” that Meek talks about on his record. (Meek mentions Drake’s sly jab at Tory Lanez). Now if there’s a leak in Drake’s camp, that’s messed up. Meek said that he got it from the Ghostwriter. Meek’s labelmate Omelly shows up for some bars and it had people asking for the record with just Meek’s verse.

Now did these records do enough to make me say “RUN THAT SHIT BACK!!!” Eh, not really. I’m not their target audience either.
